Quality Street Chocolates

Image
My wife's good friend from Canada brought my favorite chocolates  which are only available in the United Kingdom and Canada (at least that is where I have seen it).  The chocolates are called Quality Street and frankly they are simply delicious.  The Quality Street chocolates come in a container and they are individually wrapped.  The chocolates come in twelve flavors like Coconut Eclaire, Hazelnut Caramel, Chocolate Fudge, etc., and etc.  I still remember when I first ate them. I was four years old and I got my first box when I turned four.  I single handedly finished a 2 lb box of them.  The next day I was sick and eventually had worms. Through the whole ordeal, I thought the chocolates were worth the pain.  Once I moved to India when I was five, my decadent habit was put rest since I never got a hold of them.  My taste buds would occasionally revive when my dad or some other person would send my parents a box of Quality Street chocolates.  After our honeymoon in October 2002,

If my mom were alive...

Today if my mom were alive today then she would be sixty years old. Wow! Time flies by fast. My mom Tabitha was born on December 24th, 1947 in New Delhi, India and she passed away on January 2nd, 1992 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. As I look back and I realize that I didn't spend all of my life with her since she was with my dad and brother in the Middle East while I was India. She was part of my life on a full time basis from 1986 till she died. I wish I got to know my mom more however we, as people, have to realize time flies. Before you know it, we are on our deathbed staring at our sad kids, nieces, nephews, grandkids, grand nieces and nephews. The only constant in our temporal life is Christ. His love for us is constant. His presence in my life is constant. I find comfort in that since He is the anchor of my life. I am also comforted by the fact that this is what my mother wanted of my life which is to be a living sacrifice for Christ.

Blessing from the toilet ...eh?

Image
You might wonder that it is an odd title for a blog entry however I felt it was appropriate. Let me explain. Last week, my daughter was playing with cell phone and she accidentally dropped into the toilet. The phone was pretty much fried after that. I could not use it. And so I went to see my friend Bobby Cherian, who owns a Verizon cell phone store, in Damascus, MD . After twenty minutes of looking around, I found the cell phone I liked. It is Verizon's LG enV which has a keyboard with a descent screen. I, now, use the cell phone to call my friends, use the internet to check my email on Yahoo! and Gmail, and play Madden Football 08 . Yes, Madden Football which is not bad for a cell phone. I paid a minimal amount to get the game. I am enjoying my new gadget and therefore it was blessing from the toilet. However I did have to add 2 more years to my Verizon contract. Here is a YouTube video which gives more information about the LG enV

Crossroads

Image
As I sit down to write this blog, I am at a crossroads in my life. I have been offered a high level, good paying job to work for a US government agency. The position seems to be promising and it seems to offer the intellectual flexibility and creative latitude which I seem to crave since my current job doesn't offer much of that. To build context for this blog entry, let me explain what I do for a living. I am a software developer, a code monkey, a software hacker or, in old school talk, I am a Java programmer. I truly enjoy programming since it offers me a medium where I can be problem solver and I can pull on my creative and intellectual skills. However when I am asked to build software functionality on a poorly designed software system, it is not thrilling. In fact working with poor software sucks the energy out of you because you cannot clean up the code but rather build on it. Everyone on the software development agrees that the code can be cleaned up however contractu

Who should I vote for?

Image
I have been following the candidates for next year's Presidential Election and I cannot pick any candidate since my views are split across Right and Left. Therefore I have decided the candidates should convince me who I should vote for. This is my stance on the issues. War in Iraq The candidate I pick should have a realistic plan on how and when we should pull our troops from the hostile land. I would like see time frames, strategies, how to deal with risks and save our nation money. Environment As I write this blog, I am alarmed on how fast our environment is deteratoring. I want to see some valid plans from the next president. I have been disappointed how Bush has treated this issue. Oil isn't everything. I would like to see Al Gore involved in this area. Immigration Yes I am a first generation immigrant. I realize that it is not easy to set roots in this country which I now call "My country". When I came to this country I was legal and I have been legal ever

Sweet Science

Image
Three weeks ago, I have to say that I saw the best boxing fight ever. The boxing fight was between Joe Calzaghe and Mikkel Kessler . Wow! It was awesome. It wasn't a typical blood and guts fights where fighters show courage, determination and a will to survive. This fight was more in the " sweet science " category. The lighting fast hand speed, power, the body movement, offense, defense, and simply power and determination. It was simply beautiful. If anything is done to perfection. it is a simply a beautiful act where words cannot describe the simplicity, the elegance, and its place in that movement of time. I have to say this fight fit this category. Here is a post fight comments by the HBO team. The video doesn't have any video for the first 24 seconds (just audio).

These last two weeks...

Image
For the last two weeks, I been working crazy hour (70+ hours a week). It 's a been wild. Even though I have spent so many hours working, I have enjoyed my work. I have working with the Oracle database and various java apis. The part I hate is that I don't get to spend time with my family. My kids are growing up so fast. I am glad this crazy schedule ends this Friday Nov. 15th, 2007. Anyway back to work....

Meet the Robinsons

Image
Today I bought the movie, Meet The Robinsons , at Best Buy for $14.99 plus tax and in the evening the Moses family-minus Michelle and Patricia since they went to a Southern Living House Party- watched the whole movie. I really like the Disney movie since it is funny, touchy, imaginative, great graphics and overall a good plot. I first watched movie on American Airlines flight to Seattle from Dallas . It reminded that I was fortunate to know my parents, see their love for me and live with them. My kids are fortunate to know their parents (Michelle and myself) who dearly love them (even if they spill water on our laptop - see Michelle's blog entry ). Orphans or foster care kids have a harsh life and we should show Christ's love to them. Parents, please "Meet the Robinsons" by renting this movie. I recommend it. I also like the song on the YouTube video since it talks about kids! (Don't play it if you are planning to see the movie).

The Moses Bust!

Why is it that every year my first round draft pick in Flast Fest Fantasy Football League is a bust? Here is a list of busts I have had: Priest Holmes - He was hurt that year Jamal Lewis - His first year out of prison and boy was he terrible LaMont Jordan - Two words - Art Shell - Al Davis thought he could get retro with his team Laurence Maroney - He is currently hurt this year. Journey Man and backup - Sammy Morris is having a better year. How bad is that? Anyway next year, I am going to pick Baltimore defense since I have been ridiculed in my league ever since I picked Baltimore defense in the sixth round. Christian and gang please give up. I am better than that (other than my history of first round picks). Next year I heading to Barbados with my family and Kevin and Sadiqq can pick my team. Well that's all for now and I had to relay my anguish on my first round picks. I feel like the LA Clippers or the Arizona Cardinals who are historical losers! Oh well live goes on

At peace with Computer Science

For the last few weeks and months, I have finally decided what I want to do with my career. I am happy with my decision. For the past years, I was at a crossroads with my career. I enjoyed writing java software, XML schemas, database work and others however I felt that I was not getting a chance to implement my ideas. Recently I have been reading Google employees' white papers and just researching new technologies, new methodologies and new ideas. It has been a long time since I have been passionate about something. I realized that I can actually use my undergraduate training, which I gained when I got my B.S. Chemistry from University of Kansas (KU) . The ability to do experiments, apply statistical methods to create math functions, writing white papers. I have always been a fan of theory and a study in abstract topics. At KU, my favorite chemistry class was Quantum Chemistry where we constantly proved complex math equations for abstract theories. I also enjoy math like c

Yesterday...

Image
Yesterday my wife Michelle and I celebrated our 5th year anniversary of our marriage. It's been five years of bliss. I am content with what the Lord has blessed me with. A beautiful and healthy family of a wife and three little munchkins. I cannot even believe my oldest is 4 years old. Hey Tabitha slowed down alittle will ya! During the last five years, I have seen my family grown and the Lord providing during this whole time. Only His blessing. As my wife and I look forward to the next five, ten, fifteen, twenty years of our marriage, we know that we need to trust in Christ, each other and pray daily for wisdom for the daily trials of life. Michelle, If you are reading this entry then I have to say I am a happy man who has been blessed by God our Lord Jesus Christ. I had a great time in the last five years and I am looking forward to spend the rest of my life with you. Love, Enoch Moses

And now finally...

After creating a new blog for my technical blurbs, I can now go back to blogging the other things going on in my life. Here is a list: Sucker in Fantasy Football - I am currently in three fantasy football leagues and I am not happy with my teams. I have underachieving, mediocre, injured or good running backs on bad offenses. My wide receivers have been extremely inconsistent and my quarterbacks have been pass happy because their offenses cannot run the ball. The consistent positions are kickers (I have Neil Rackers and others), tight-ends and team defenses. For the last four years, my first round pick has been a bust. Seriously, my first round pick curse is worst than the Madden Football curse. Here is a recap of my terrible first round picks: Priest Holmes (2004) - He was hurt most of the year Jamal Lewis (2005) - He just got out of prison and he had a bad year LaMont Jordan (2006) - Played under Art Shell and Shell's 1990 offense (need I say more) Laurence Maroney

Attention: Readers,

Since my blog has gotten technical, I am going to write about technology in my blog: http://technology-works.blogspot.com I am going to start adding entries about my life and non-techie thoughts on this blog so thanks again for reading my blog. - enoch

Restful in Seattle

Image
From August 27th, 2007 we, the Moses Family, have been in Seattle, Washington visiting my parents who moved there early this year. It is a beautiful city. We did alot of sightseeing with our three little kids. We went to the Space Needle , Argosy Cruise , Mount Rainier , San Juan Islands and (my favorite) Seattle Mariners' baseball game [ boxscore from the game I attended ]. I love the tall pine trees, the backdrop of snow covered mountains and the mild weather. Yesterday I went to go WII hunting and I found one however while I was debating whether to buy it or not, someone came and bought it. I guess I should have made my mind before I went to the store. Currently I am watching the New York Mets at Chicago Cubs on ESPN HD. The stats from this game will decide whether I make the post season in the Fantasy Baseball League I play in. This year it was a blast since each player selection made a difference. Tonight my wife and I are going on a "date". We never get time to t

Its in a month and half...

Well you may know that it has been a while since I wrote my blog entry. What can I say. I have been swamped at work and at home. Time doesn't stop until I write a blog entry. Instead time marches on to the beat of tic, toc, tic, toc. As time continues to march on, I am close to wrapping up my fantasy baseball season where I am back into playoff contention and I am getting ready for the fantasy football season. The fantasy baseball game requires day to day following but it is an easier game since it is person-to-person (pitcher vs batter) matchup game. Football on the other hand is a true team sport. Team matchups help but it is still "crapshoot". However since games only take once a week, I spend more time researching match ups, injury reports and speculate on next week's games. In closing, I would like to leave you with this NFL.com TV ad. It is so true about the "armchair GM". It's all about the championship.

I didn't mean to but I did...

After years of ridiculing folks who play Dance,Dance Revolution (DDR) , today I finally bought the game and the gamepad for my PS2. I figured it is a good way of staying home and trying to workout. No, No, I didn't buy it to be a DDR expert but rather use it as an excuse to work out. In my hectic schedule, I don't have time to go to the gym or even have time to run. I believe the game should be a good investment for my heart. In other news, I was supposed to go " paint balling " today however last night I had a bad coughing attack and I didn't think I would be ready for a good shoot up session. It's too bad since I was looking forward it. Well that's all for now.

I dig "UDig"

Image
It's be over a week since I did my last blog entry. The truth is that I have busy at work and family and I have not had any time to write a new blog entry until now. The only interesting thing that happened this week was that my son Seth Josiah Moses turned two years or 730 days. To celebrate this day, I took him and the rest of the family to Mikayo , a Hibachi grill restaurant. The Hibachi grill is where a cook cooks in front of the customers while entertaining them. It is a neat experience. My son had a look of "shock and awe" with the flames and smoke and the cook grilling our chickens, shrimp, steak, rice and vegetables. We all enjoyed the restaurant but not as much as going to Baskin Robbins for dessert. I believe he and his family enjoyed the family birthday outing. His formal birthday party is on June 2nd, 2007. On other fronts, I am getting fascinated by Geospatial Information System(GIS) . Yesterday and today I spent a few hours reading up on GIS and d

Warehousing Service

Web 2.0 is the vision of many technology visionaries where they believe businesses do not have to buy infrastructure but rather depend on services to get their business done. I like Amazon's new web service which is called Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) . Systems can store and retrieve any amount data at a small price ($.15 GB per month). I like this type of service since it is practical and I don't have to buy flash drives or be limited to Yahoo! Briefcase 's 30MB. I will most probably purchase this service.

My past and future Travels

Image
As many of you know or don't know that I have either visited, stopped-over or stayed in several countries in my young 31 years of life. The truth is that I have only been to Canada in the last 17 years and I visited the other countries when I was in my teen or pre-teen years. I also found this travelblog which lets you mark all of the countries you have been too. Here is my: My Visited Countries And these are the states I visited in the US: My Visited US States As you can see that I have not traveled west of Colorado . God Willing that will change in July when my family and I will visit the State of Washington and British Columbia !

40.43393% - Major Geek Okay, Okay, I have not been blogging everyday. The point is that I don't have time. I had to go to a funeral couple weeks ago, then drove to Canton, Michigan and East Lansing, Michigan , stayed there a week and then drove back to New Market, Maryland and last weekend we, as in my family and I, went to Greenwood Hills, Pennsylvania for a church conference. The conference was great! As you can see, I had a good reason. Yesterday, Michelle my wife said she took a Geek Test. She said she scored less than five percentage and today I took the Geek Test. The results showed that I am a Major Geek!!! Oh well, atleast my cool (she is not geeky) wife loves me :)

The 2 resolutions

Image
Well here it goes! I promised myself that I would never make New Year resolutions since most if not all people cannot keep them. Well I have been able to do that for the last 31 years and counting. No New Year resolutions! I did, however, created one yesterday April 29th, 2007. This is what I resolved to do as long as I can: Read the whole bible in a year (365 days) Blog everyday! Read the whole bible in a year - I have personally never done it. I have read through the bible but I have not done it in a year. It's not an easy task. For instance, tonight I read 1 Kings 8 and 1 Kings 9 which are 66 and 28 verses respectfully. Wow! That is alot reading but you know what, it is good reading. I enjoy reading my bible. It's quality stuff and it is the Word of God. Well that's all for today.

It's been almost week....

Image
Well, it's been almost week from my last blog entry. Why am I taking so much time between blog entries? The answer is that I haven't had much time to get my thoughts together and write a blog entry. I have been busy folks! Work, and spending time with my family has been pretty much sucking all my time. So what has been going on in my life for the last week or so. Let's see: Went to Philadelphia to attend a family friend's funeral - the family friend's 12 year old son hanged himself Worked on a Identity Management (IDM) Paper for the US Government - IDM in a SOA environment Watched the NFL Draft - Brady Quinn was a steal for the Browns Keeping up with my fantasy baseball - I need a good outfielder Working on a local antique dealership website - it's tedious work Spending time with my family - enjoyed it Went to Brookside Gardens in Silver Springs, Maryland - Kids loved it Went to church - Heard David Dunlap speak on prophecy Taking a proactive approach (eating he

Making on money from your blog

Image
Ah! The question that has come across every blogger's mind, "Am I wasting my time by writing an online journal or can I make money of this habit?" The truth is that you can money of your blogging habit however you cannot make a living of it. I have been blogging for almost six months and my wife has been blogging on blogger for couple of months. So far we have made a whopping $2.46 from adwords on our blogs. As you can see, it is quite pathetic! You do get paid more if more people read your blog. Here are certain things I have learnt so far about making your blog more visible (and maybe profitable): Remember to blog as often as you can . According to Technorati.com , Boing Boing: A Directory of Wonderful Things is the most popular blog. Boing Boing bloggers add around twenty five entries a day. That is alot. I personally don't have that time but refresh content means more people will read your blog. Add creative and numerous metadata labels to your blog ent

Lenny

Image
Today I found out on facebook that one of the guys I used to ride the bus with in India passed away a few years ago. He was a Kenya n and he and I used to ride in the back of the school bus. His name was Leonard but he used to go by the name Lenny. The disturbing part about his death is how he did died. He died in October, 2002 at Springfield, Missouri . According to BlackPressUSA.com , Lenny was found dangling from a microwave tower. The local police stated Lenny killed himself but the evidence shows that he could have been lynched. Springfield, Missouri was known to have racial problems but it hits a bit closer when someone you knew could have been lynched. Leonard Gakinya (Lenny), it was a pleasure knowing you.

WordPlay

Image
As stated in my previous blog entry , my co-worker creates crosswords, which get published in various newspapers like the New York Times, and he recommended that I should see the movie Wordplay: The Movie . Finally last week I got to see this movie and I have to say I liked it. It's a documentary about people who love constructing, editing or solving crossword puzzles. The featured people in the movie are: Will Shortz - The crossword editor for the New York Times which sets the standard for crossword puzzles. Merl Reagle - A crossword constructor. A crossword constructor is a person who constructs crossword puzzles Daniel Orkent - The former crossword editor for the New York Times. He also has a special in my heart since he invented rotisserie baseball Trip Payne - A crossword constructor and one of the best crossword puzzle solvers. Ellen Ripstein - A crossword editor and one of the previous winners of the crossword championships Tyler Hinman - A twenty or twenty one ye

A distinct memory

As I remember my childhood, I remember listening to this song when I was five years old . It was a Jim Reeves Christmas song and it used to be played on a tape player almost every morning at my grandmother's house in New Delhi, India . I searched for Jim Reeves on YouTube.com and I found one of the songs I grew up with. The song brings back memories on how I use to play on swing, go down the slide, stare at Archie comics and be the greatest cricket player in the world. All those memories which are so precious to me and now I see my kids growing and and wonder what kind of memories will they have. I pray and hope that they remember that their parents were Godly parents who loved Christ and wanted to His will. As other parents read this blog entry, let us not forget that we teach our kids why we do certain things and not for tradition purposes. For example I hope my kids remember that our family went to church because we loved Christ and we remembered His death on the cross

My perfect lineup

Image
Yesterday I was watching Sunday Night Baseball game on ESPN with my high school buddy Eric . an avid Red Sox fan, The game was between Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers at Arlington, Texas . To make the game more interesting, I was just routing against Red Sox. Anyway during the game, we talked about picking our all star team. To make it a little interesting, we decided to pick players in a batting lineup. Eric said he could just name his all star team but he couldn't come up with a lineup. I started to think about it and I realized that it is not an easy job. You cannot pick the best players since most of them are sluggers and RBI guys. I believe the perfect lineup should have speed, power, good hitting, and aggressive. Well after thinking about it for a day, here is my perfect lineup for this season: Jose Reyes (SS -NYM) - Fast, Exciting, good glove and he steals alot of bases Joe Mauer (C - Min) - Batting Champ and hardly strikes out and knows the Starting Pitche

"Networking" - The new business model

Image
Yesterday my sister-in-law sent me an email wanting me to join her network at IconBuffet.com . I therefore joined the network to see what it is all about. It is a network where people get and trade icons like baseball cards. Sounds ludicrous? It might be so but it is a good place to need icons for your website. I have to say that websites like IconBuffet seem to sell their product, Icons (aka Clip art in the 1990s) via the "networking" model. I don't think that this model will fly in the long run because if many people don't buy their "Icons" from IconBuffet then IconBuffet might remove this functionality from their website and then try to sell their "Icons" in CDs at your nearest Best Buy or any other tech store. The networking model is a good business model to sell any product since the customers know other customers and potential customers and the existing customers will do the informal sales pitch to the potential customer. It is c

The email is from CareerBuilder.com ( CandidateEmail@Site.Careerbuilder.com ) but the sender's name is stated as Lisa Davis. The question is then, "who is really Lisa Davis?" Is Lisa Davis a branding strategy used by CareerBuilder or is there a really a person who is associated with CareerBuilder and recruiting? The anwer is: I don't know. Pinless Harassment

Image
I know it is hard to be disciplined to blog everyday or every other day since sometimes we don't have time to write, we don't have anything to write about or we are simply not inspired to write. I admit I struggle with it but I also realize that the longer you wait to write then harder it is to blog. Anyway back to today's blog. Lately couple of my friends are harassing me that I am pinless and I am not certified. These friends of mine are Sun Java Certified Programmers . They took a certification test for Java 5 and passed it. After they passed the test, Sun Microsystems sent them a certificate, a plastic card and a pin stating that they are certified. If my friends are reading this blog entry then I say to them, "Pinless people can beat people with pins since the they outnumber the 'pinned'." Don't worry I soon shall be pinned. After all Lucas , Java is everywhere including Ubuntu while C# is only in the Windows realm. Lucas please thi

Social Networks

Image
Yesterday I signed up on Facebook.com which is another social network that seems to be quite popular. I am therefore on three social networks: Myspace.com Facebook.com Linkedin.com - which is a professional networking site for jobs Anyway yesterday I signed in and now I am reconnecting with my middle school buddies(yes middle school buddies from the 80s). Back then folks were into mullets, Nike high-tops, and typical 80s stuff. I now look at their profiles and everyone is an adult. Yes some have kids and others are married and then lastly there are some who are married and have kids. I guess I fall in the last category. Boy! Time flies by fast and in the next years I will have teenage kids, and then grand-kids and eventually your age folks die and then die. I guess that is life's vicious circle and then again it is good to reconnect with people who you knew once. Who knew you can technology will play such a large part in my life and in friends' lives. Then again.

While I was driving today...

Image
This evening while I was driving home, my mind wandered to the Florida Keys . My wife (who just started a new blog ), my kids and I went to Florida nine months ago and we spent couple of days in the Keys. As I was stuck behind a long line of cars going at 35 miles per hour, I thought of the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the warm sun, the drive on the 7 mile bridge , the horizon where the sky and ocean met, and seafood. If I could get a telecommute position (not that I am looking), I would probably move there and work from there. I also remembered one of the people I met there who visited Key West once and then moved down there the next year. I guess that's why tourist's destinations like Florida Keys, Arizona and other places are popular destination The question I have for you is,"what your favorite spot".

Perceptions

Image
Have you ever watched the show " South Park "? I personally have watched maybe ten minutes of a show when I was in college which was eight years ago. I didn't like the show at all since I thought the humor was crude and frankly terrible. The worst part was the animation. I didn't like the style. Well my friend Eric found this web site http://www.sp-studio.de which lets you create South Park characters. Therefore I went ahead and created myself and then Eric created me on this site. This is how I created myself: As you can see, I pictured myself with: Glasses - since I wear glasses Droopy eyed - i believe i have droopy eyes Red Shirt - I have a red pullover Drool - I sometimes drool when I am sleeping Green gloves - since they reminded me of my wife's gloves Blue pants - since I like to wear jeans Orange hat - I have a Baltimore Orioles hat Bin Laden's cave - I hope we catch him This is how my friend pictured me: He has me excited about reading

Cricket World Cup

Image
As we in America cheer our alma mater's men's college basketball to victory for the next two weeks, there are people in the Carribean who are celebrating every out or every run for their beloved West Indies cricket team. Cricket?! Yes cricket indeed-- a game played on a "pitch" (a prepared patch of ground which is in the middle of a circular field). The West Indian team is hosting the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Cricket World Cup .
